Originally named Fraternal Systems, Epsilon's history began with four Harvard Business School students creating the first database to store member contact information for their fraternity. Their computer program enabled fraternities to automate communication with their expanding member base. Once word spread that contact information could be stored on a database, Fraternal Systems began working with various non-profits to do the same for their fundraising efforts. Epsilon went public in 1984. In 1990 the firm was acquired by American Express, and by Alliance Data in 2004. The firm has acquired Frequency Marketing Inc. (2005), Bigfoot Interactive (2005), DoubleClick Email Solutions (2006), CPC Associates (2006), Abacus (2007), ICOM (2009), Equifax Direct Marketing Services Division (2010), Aspen Marketing Services (2011), and Hyper Marketing (2012).
