Irwin P Raij

Irwin P. Raij is a partner in Foley & Lardner's Regulatory Industries Department and is vice chair of the Sports Industry Team. Mr. Raij is a member of the Public Affairs and Real Estate Practices and is also a member of the Senior Living Industry Team. Mr. Raij has unique experience with the development of professional sports facilities, team operations, economic development, campaign finance and government ethics. In the sports arena, Mr. Raij is currently a key player in Major League Baseball's current ongoing efforts to facilitate the construction of a new stadium for the Florida Marlins in South Florida. In addition, Mr. Raij represented Major League Baseball in the relocation of the Montreal Expos, now the Washington Nationals, to Washington, D.C. This work included negotiating and drafting the baseball stadium agreement, the new stadium lease and the construction administration agreement and following the move the legal work related to the team's operations. Mr. Raij continues to provide counsel to the team with respect to the construction of its new stadium and its daily business operations. Before joining Foley, Mr. Raij served as assistant counsel to the Gore/Lieberman presidential campaign, with responsibility for compliance with Federal Election Commission regulations, drafting committee contracts and leases, conducting research and providing other legal guidance. Mr. Raij previously served as an attorney in the White House Office of Counsel to the President and later as associate counsel in the White House Office of Counsel to the Vice President. Mr. Raij assisted in the defense of the vice president and the administration in congressional and Department of Justice investigations. Mr. Raij began his career as an attorney advisor for the Department of Housing & Urban Development, and returned to the Department of Housing & Urban Development to serve as special assistant in the office of the general counsel and as acting managing attorney for the FOIA Department. Mr. Raij received his J.D. from Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, Mo. and a B.B.A. from the University of Miami. Mr. Raij is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Florida.
