Fernando J Corbato

Dr. Fernando J. Corbato is a professor emeritus in the department of electrical engineering and computer science at MIT and a pioneer in computer operating systems. He also has achieved wide recognition for his work on the design and development of multiple-access and timesharing computer systems. Corabato was born on July 1, 1926 in Oakland, California and received his B.S. degree from Caltech (1950) and a Ph.D. from MIT (1956) in physics. He was appointed associate professor at MIT in 1962, promoted to professor in 1965, and was associate department head for computer science and engineering between 1974-78 and 1983-93. He was associated with the MIT Computation Center from its organization in 1956 until 1966. In 1963, he was a founding member of the Laboratory for Computer Science (formerly Project MAC), an MIT laboratory initially formed to study multiple-access computer systems and their applications.
