Graduated cum laude from the University of Washington and received a law degree from Seattle University, also cum laude. She is a daughter of Joann J. Hicks of Marysville, Wash., and the late Warren W. Smith. Her mother worked until July 2003 at Boeing, the aircraft maker, in Everett, Wash., for which she was a training specialist in human resources. The bride's father was a tooling coordinator in aircraft manufacturing there. Smith is also somewhat well-known for suing the University of Washington's Law School, claiming that she failed to gain entrance because she was white. She lost.
