Nitzan Pelman opened the New York region of Citizen Schools in September of 2007 and served as its founding Executive Director for six years. Citizen Schools extends the school day for students in low income communities by providing additional academic support. It also places students in apprenticeships with professionals like architects, engineers, and journalists who teach students their craft and make learning relevant.
Nitzan tripled the organization’s budget, staff and students served over six years. She built a senior board of advisors with managing directors from Goldman Sachs, Carlyle, Discovery, NBC, and Google. Ms. Pelman raised $14 million since the organization’s inception and secured partnerships with Fortune 500 companies including Google, Facebook, AOL, Alliance Bernstein, Fidelity, JP Morgan, and Bank of America.
