Computer scientist Judy Faulkner got her start in the department of psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, when faculty members asked her to develop a program to track patients. It became the basis for Epic Systems' electronic health record. Faulkner, who keeps a low profile, founded Epic (originally called Human Services Computing) in 1979. The company, which shuns marketing, grew word of mouth. Faulkner's big break came in 2003, when HMO giant Kaiser Permanente picked the company to implement a massive installation of electronic health records. Her customers now include big hospitals and prestigious academic centers, such as Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins, and Cedars-Sinai. Bachelor of Arts / Science, Dickinson College; Master of Science, University of Wisconsin
