Spyros M. Polemis is chairman and managing director of Seacrest Shipping Co., Ltd., the London representative of a large group of shipping interests with a history of more than two hundred years in the business. A member of different companies operate various types of ships, such as bulkcarriers, oil tankers, chemical carriers and others, and Spyros Polemis has managed shipbuilding and repair projects in shipyards around the globe. Polemis is chairman of ABS U.K., National Committee; Council member of ABS USA; director of the Hellenic Mutual War Risk Association; a member of the International Marine Industries Forum; a member of the Board of the North of England P&I Association, and their former chairman; a former chairman of the Newcastle P&I Association; and former chairman of the International Dry Cargo Shipowners Association. Polemis currently serves as chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the international association for merchant ship owners. As head of the ICS, Polemis works with all shipping associations worldwide, government ministers, and governmental agencies. Polemis is also president of the International Shipping Federation, which is the international employer’s organization for the industry, dealing with labor affairs and training issues for seafarers worldwide. Polemis was educated in Athens, London, and the United States, where he obtained a degree in mechanical engineering, with a major in naval architecture, from Stevens Institute of Technology.
