Oilsands pioneer Rick George, who led Suncor Energy for 21 years as president and CEO, died Tuesday August 1 2017 from complications of acute myeloid leukemia, his family announced. He was 67. George, who joined Suncor in 1991, transformed the money-losing Calgary operation into the country’s largest integrated energy company, including the $19.6-billion merger with Petro-Canada in 2009. Raised in the small ranching community of Brush, Colo., he earned science and law degrees in the United States. George served as managing director of Sun Oil Britain Ltd. before moving to Canada in 1991, later adopting Canadian citizenship. fter retiring from Suncor in 2012, George served on the boards of Osum Oil Sands Corp., RBC, Anadarko Petroleum and Obsidian Energy (formerly Penn West) and as a partner at Novo Investment Group. George’s immediate family includes his wife Julie, sons Matthew and Zachary, and daughter Emily.
