Macon Brock was a pillar in the Hampton Roads business and philanthropic communities. As a co-founder and former CEO of Dollar Tree, Brock lived what many believed to be the American dream. Not only that, he wanted to make a difference in the community. He and his wife Joan were known to donate to educational and environmental causes, as well as the arts community. They served on various boards at colleges and community and environmental organizations.
He attended Granby High School and was the son of a Norfolk doctor who worked as a tuberculosis specialist in charge of city’s Grandy Sanatorium for 29 years
Joan attended Longwood University and Brock attended Randolph-Macon, where he majored in Latin.
Upon graduating in 1964, Brock went to Quantico for Marine Corps officer training, Lindgren said. Brock served in Vietnam, then was a special agent with the United States Naval Intelligence in Norfolk before he went into business with his father-in-law, K.R. Perry, who had bought a variety store .
Brock started K&K Toys with his father-in-law and brother-in-law, Douglas Perry, in 1970, according to Dollar Tree’s website. The toy store grew into 130 stores along the East Coast.
Brock, his brother-in-law and Ray Compton opened five stores in 1986 called “Only $1.00,” with three in Virginia, one in Tennessee and one in Georgia, according to the website. The company changed its name to Dollar Tree in 1993. The company’s website says it opened its 5,000th store in 2014.
Brock also was known for his efforts in the community, higher education, the environment and the arts. He served as chairman of Randolph-Macon’s Board of Trustees for 10 years. His wife also served on the Board of Trustees at Virginia Wesleyan University for seven years and was the board’s chair for three years.
The couple, who have three children and six grandchildren, also helped with the creation of the M. Foscue Brock Institute for Community and Global Health at Eastern Virginia Medical School, which aims to train community-oriented physicians and health care professionals.
Mr. Brock has been Chairman of the Board since 2001 and a director since 1986. He was Chief Executive Officer from 1993 to 2003. From 1986, when he co-founded Dollar Tree, until 2001, he was President. Until 1991, he was an officer and director of K&K Toys, Inc. Mr. Brock has served on our Board since 1986.
