Dr. Shavers has been the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Global Smarts, Inc. (business advisory services) since February 2001. Served from 1999-2001 as undersecretary of commerce for technology at the Department of Commerce. Previously held engineering and managerial positions at Motorola, Hewlett-Packard, Varian Associates, and Intel Corp., where from 1987-1999 she was director of emerging technology in the microprocessor sector group at Intel Corporation. She also serves as a director of ATMI, Inc. (semiconductor materials and packaging) and serves on the Advisory Board for E.W. Scripps Company (media). She served as Under Secretary of Commerce for Technology for the United States Department of Commerce from November 1999 to February 2001 after having served as its Under Secretary Designate from April 1999 to November 1999. She served as Sector Manager, Microprocessor Products Group for Intel Corporation (chip maker) prior to April 1999. She served as non-executive chairman of BitArts Ltd. (software development) from 2001 to December 2003. She holds a B.S. (1976) in chemistry and a Ph.D. (1981) in solid-state chemistry from Arizona State University and an honorary master's degree (1997) in business management from California Polytechnic State University. Shavers is a board member of Intel Foundation's "Women in Science and Engineering Scholarship" program, a member of the board of directors of the San Jose Tech Museum of Innovation, a mentor for the Semiconductor Research Corporation, and in 1996 was one of ten inductees into the International Women in Technology Hall of Fame. Shavers currently lives in Santa Clara, CA with her husband, Joseph Agu, and their three children. She is a member of the 1998 class of Henry Crown Fellows at the Aspen Institute.
