Richard G. “Dick” Cline (88) was born on February 17, 1935, and passed away on March 19, 2023, Dick had a distinguished career as a business executive as Chairman and CEO of Jewel Corp, Chairman and CEO of Nicor and as a member of numerous boards including Hussmann Corporation, Northern Trust’s Mutual Funds, K-Mart Corporation, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, and PepsiAmericas. Richard G. Cline, Chairman, Hawthorne Investors, Inc. Director since 1987. Mr. Cline served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Nicor Inc. beginning in 1985, and became Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer in 1986. He retired as Chief Executive Officer in May 1995 and continued to serve as Chairman until his retirement from the company at the end of 1995. Prior to joining Nicor, Mr. Cline was an executive of Jewel Companies, Inc. for 22 years, becoming Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer in 1984. He is also Chairman of Hawthorne Investors, Inc., a private management advisory and investment firm he founded in 1996. Additionally, he has served as a director of Ryerson, Inc., Chairman of the Boards of Trustees of The Northern Funds, The Northern Institutional Funds and The Northern Multi-Manager Funds and he is a past chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. From 1998 to 2000, Mr. Cline was Chairman of Hussmann International, Inc. Mr. Cline is a director emeritus and past president of the University of Illinois Foundation. Dick is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carole, his brother, Bill, his two daughters, Patty (Ted McDougal) and Linda (Jim Raymond), his two sons, Rich (Rebecca) and Jeff (Jill), seventeen grandchildren, Sara, Matt, Andrew, Danny, Chris, Richie, Maggie, Timmy, Robbie, Rachel, Molly, Brian, Emily, Olivia, Charlie, Juliet and Phoebe and 5 great-grandchildren, Hunter, Sloane, Leighton, Eloise and Davis.
