Gary was born in Los Angeles, and received his B.S. from the University of Southern California in 1962. After his graduation, he joined Union Bank in Los Angeles, focusing on corporate finance and commercial lending. He soon returned to the University of Southern California for graduate studies, and received his M.B.A. in 1965. He joined Goldman Sachs & Co. in April 1968, beginning his career in Los Angeles. He moved to New York in January of 1985 and joined Equity Capital Markets; subsequently he became co-head of New York Institutional Sales. In 1992, he became a Partner and moved to Tokyo, Japan as co-head of the Tokyo Equity Division and the Global Japanese Equity Products. Gary moved to San Francisco in November of 1996 as head of the San Francisco-based equity business, focusing on developing the Private Banking business in the region. He retired in June of 1999. He serves on Jumpstart's Western Regional board, after serving on its national board for close to 10 years and chairing that board for the final five years of his tenure. He serves on New Teacher Center's board as SeaChange's representative, and has also served on other nonprofit boards since retiring from Goldman Sachs.
