first worked in film as a distributor in 1978, before going on to be manager and occasional programmer of the famous Electric Cinema Club in Portobello Road. Later at the BBC he directed films for Omnibus and Arena, including profiles of film-makers such as Roberto Rossellini, Jean Renoir, Quentin Tarantino, Milos Forman and Robert Altman, as well as other arts and music subjects. He has also worked as a freelance journalist and reviewer for publications such as Time Out and Sight & Sound, and as a book editor for Faber. David has been the author of a BFI Modern Classic on Last Tango in Paris, and has regularly programmed seasons at BFI Southbank and chaired on-stage interviews. He currently works as a freelance film director and writer.
