Former MIT professor traded classroom for the boardroom. Founded Linkabit 1968; company developed technology that is now the basis for most of telecommunications industry. Founded Qualcomm 1985, creator of CDMA digital wireless technology. Annual sales approach $9 billion. Patent fees are 31% of revenue. Last year firm was sued by Broadcom for patent infringement; paid $19.6 million in damages. Also settled several long-running lawsuits over mobile patent licenses with Nokia in July; companies unexpectedly agreed to a 15-year agreement. Stepped down as chief exec 2005, remains chairman. Son Paul now runs company. Donates to San Diego symphony, art museum and university.
