Alex Vargas has served as Mayor of the City of Hawthorne since 2015, following earlier service as a city councilmember, mayor pro tempore, and commissioner on the Hawthorne Civil Service Commission. First elected to the city council in 2009, he was subsequently elected mayor and re-elected in 2020 and 2024. During his tenure, Vargas has focused on economic development, public safety, housing, and municipal services, while representing Hawthorne in local and regional civic contexts. Professionally, he has a background in physics and aerospace engineering and currently works as a physics professor at El Camino College, in addition to teaching math and science courses within the Los Angeles County Jail system.
