Rae Schollmaier, 81, passed away peacefully in her sleep Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2015, after a prolonged illness. Rae was born in Steubenville, Ohio, as the first child of a school superintendent and a first grade teacher. By the time she reached kindergarten, her father had died and her mother had moved the family to Norwood, Ohio, near Cincinnati. She worked at various jobs such as babysitting, store clerk and secretary while attending Norwood High School where she finished first in her class. Rae then earned a BS degree at the University of Cincinnati. Rae met her husband-to-be in a freshman English class at UC and they married in 1954. To help support Ed as he gained an MBA at Harvard and began his career at Alcon Laboratories, she taught the elementary grades in Norwood, Ohio, Brookline, Mass., Pittsburgh, Pa., Piedmont, Calif., and Arlington. She was a member of the founding faculty at Fort Worth Country Day School. She served as a longtime board member of the Fort Worth Opera and the Fort Worth Symphony. Rae also served terms as chair of both the Fort Worth and Texas State Human Rights commissions. As president of the Schollmaier Foundation, Rae supported dozens of worthwhile causes in the arts, education, and helping the needy. She always seemed to find a way to be positive. Survivors include her beloved husband of over 60 years, Ed; son, Taylor; daughter-in-law, Kim; grandchildren, Elsa and Teo; sisters, Shadra, Suzanne and Barbara.
