John Branscome, the leading Democratic tech staffer on the Senate Commerce Committee, will join Facebook's federal policy team next month (October 2021). Branscome, a longtime expert on telecommunications policy, will focus on executive branch engagement. Facebook, offering six-figure salaries that dwarf those of congressional aides, had previously hired away staff from Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) during the past two years. By hiring Branscome, it has tapped someone with close ties to Senate Commerce Chair Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), as well as numerous former committee staffers working in President Joe Biden’s executive branch. Branscome is the chief counsel and top Democratic staffer on Senate Commerce’s telecommunications subcommittee, and before that served as the chief counsel of its internet subcommittee. Branscome has served in various positions on the Senate Commerce Committee since 2010.
