Daughter of Samuel Hill & Mary Francis Hill. Mary Mendenhall Hill was mentally handicapped (or schizophrenic) and died at 51 in an institution.
Mary lived mainly with her mother, but spent some time in her youthful years with her father, Samuel Branson Hill in a cottage built especially for her in a small community named Maryhill, Washington which he attempted to develop as a farming community for Quakers. The establishment did not thrive. Mary would spend time in her cottage with a nurse on her visits. She was an able horsewoman during those years. After the death of her father she would permanently return east.
