Charles Grossman, a former Managing Director of ING Clarion Partners, one of the world's largest real estate investment management firms, and Chairman of the International Council of Shopping Centers, ICSC (2005-2006) died Saturday, August 18, 2007 after a brief illness. He was 63 years old. A respected expert on retail real estate finance, Mr. Grossman worked at ING Clarion Partners from 1988 until his retirement in 2006. While with ING Clarion, Mr. Grossman managed approximately $19 billion in real estate assets. He was also a member of the firm's Executive Committee and a member of the Investment Policy Committee of ING Clarion Real Estate Securities. Prior thereto, he was associated with James D. Wolfensohn, Inc. and was the founding partner and Chief Executive Officer of Schroder Real Estate Associates, an institutional investment management firm jointly owned with Schroder plc. He began his career at Irwin Management Company of Columbus, Indiana, which managed the capital of a prominent Midwestern family. Born in Houston, Texas, in 1943, Mr. Grossman learned about retailing while working in his family's apparel store. Mr. Grossman was a graduate of Harvard College (B.A., Magna Cum Laude, 1965), Columbia University School of Law (J.D., 1968), and Columbia University School of Business (M.B.A., 1969). As a Harvard undergraduate, he was a co-founder of the Eliot House Forum on Developing Nations. He served as Chairman of the International Council of Shopping Centers Educational Foundation and as member of ICSC's Board of Trustees starting in 1996. Mr. Grossman is credited by many shopping center professionals with educating the industry, notably by sharing his expertise on the subject of shopping center finance through ICSC and other industry forums over the years. Mr. Grossman was also a Founding Sponsor and member of the International Advisory Board of the Harvard Real Estate Academic Initiative. He was also past Chairman and member of the Board of Directors of the Pension Real Estate Association and from 1994 to 1999 was Chairman of the PREA Institute Committee. Mr. Grossman was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Orchestra of Saint Luke's, the Manhattan School of Music, and Congregation Emanu-El of the City of New York. He chaired Emanu-El's House Committee, which undertook the award-winning recent restoration of Temple Emanu-El. He was a director of the Skirball Center for Adult Jewish Learning at Congregation Emanu-El. Mr. Grossman is survived by his wife of over 40 years, Carol, and their two daughters, Ellie and Laura.
