Elizabeth Gray Danforth, wife of Dr. William Danforth, chancellor emeritus of Washington University, died Wednesday of cancer at age 75. Mrs. Danforth, known as Ibby, was a native of St. Louis. She graduated from John Burroughs School and earned a bachelor's degree from Wellesley College. She married Dr. William Danforth in 1950. Mrs. Danforth supported Washington University as its "First Lady" during the nearly 25 years Dr. Danforth was chancellor. She took classes, attended performances, hosted and participated in receptions and events worldwide and served on several boards and clubs. She received the William Greenleaf Eliot Society Search award in 1987 and has a scholarship fund set up in her name at Washington University. There is also a residence hall and garden in her name and a scholars program set up in both of the Danforths' names. Mrs. Danforth is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dr. William Danforth, three daughters, a son, a sister and 13 grandchildren.
