Stuart H. Altman Ph.D. has been a Sol C. Chaikin Professor of National Health Policy at Florence Heller Graduate School for Social Policy, Brandeis University, since 1977. Dr. Altman serves as a member of the faculty of The Heller School for Social Policy and Management on Brandeis' Waltham, Massachusetts campus and an economist whose research interests are primarily in the area of federal and state health policy. Dr. Altman serves as Co-Chairman of the Governor/Legislative ... Health Care Task Force for the state of Massachusetts. Prof. Altman serves as Chairman and Member of Bioethics Advisory Board of GulfStream BioInformatics Corporation (formerly Ardais Corporation). Dr. Altman served as Dean of The Heller School from September 1977 to June 1993 and served as interim President of Brandeis University from 1990 to 1991 and as Professor of Economics at Brown University from 1966 to 1970. Dr. Altman has served as Chairman, Institute for Health Policy, at The Heller School since 1977. Dr. Altman served as the Chairman of the Advisory Board to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and was a member of the Board of Trustees of Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts from 1978 to 1990. From 1971 to 1976, Dr. Altman was Deputy Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation/Health at Health Education & Welfare under President Nixon and has since advised national and state governments on major health care issues and legislation. In November 1997, Dr. Altman was appointed by President Clinton to the Bipartisan Commission on the Future of Medicare. He was a four-term Chairman of the U.S. Congressional Prospective Payment Assessment Commission responsible for advising Congress and the Administration on Medicare Payment Policies for Hospitals, Nursing Homes, Home Health Agencies and other health care providers from 1983 to April 1996 and served as a senior member of the Clinton-Gore Health Policy Transition Group from November 1992 to January 1993. He serves as Vice Chairman of EmblemHealth, Inc. He has been a Director of Visicu Inc. since November 2005 and INSPIRIS, Inc. since March 11, 2008. Dr. Altman has been a Director of IDX Systems Corp., a publicly held provider of healthcare information systems since November 1995. Since December 2001, Dr. Altman has been a Member of the Board of Directors of Lincare Holdings Inc., a publicly-traded provider of oxygen, home medical equipment and other respiratory therapy services. He has been on the Board of Directors of Multicare Companies Inc., since 1996. He serves as a Director of Aveta Inc. Dr. Altman served as a Director of OrthoLogic Corp., a publicly-traded developer, manufacturer and marketer of orthopedic devices designed to promote the healing of musculoskeletal tissue from 1998 to August 27, 2005. Dr. Altman has also been a member of the Tufts-New England Medical Center, a not-for-profit teaching hospital system. He is also a member of the Foundation Board of the Health Plan of New York, a not-for-profit health maintenance organization that provides health care services and health insurance coverage throughout the New York metropolitan area. Dr. Altman holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Economics from City College of New York and a Masters in Administration degree in Economics from University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Altman also holds a Ph.D. in Economics from University of California, Los Angeles.
