Mohamed El-Erian

El-Erian currently serves as chief economic advisor at Allianz, the corporate parent of PIMCO, where he was CEO and co-chief investment officer until his retirement in 2014. He is currently a columnist for Bloomberg and a contributing editor at the Financial Times. From 2012 to 2017, he was chair of the U.S. President's Global Economic Development Council. Previously, he was a managing director at Salomon Smith Barney/Citigroup in London and worked 15 years at the International Monetary Fund, rising to the position of deputy director. El-Erian earned a B.A./M.A. in economics from Cambridge University and doctorate and master's degrees in economics from Oxford University. He spent 15 years at the International Monetary Fund before moving to the private sector where he served as managing director at Salomon Smith Barney/Citigroup in London before first joining PIMCO in 1999. In 2006-07, El-Erian was President and CEO of Harvard Management Company (HMC), the entity managing Harvard's endowment and other related assets; he was also a faculty member of the Harvard Business School. El-Erian has served on several boards and committees, including the Emerging Markets Association, the IMF’s Committee of Eminent Persons, and the International Center for Research on Women. He was also a member of the U.S. Treasury Borrowing Advisory Committee. He is currently a board member of the National Bureau for Economic Research (NBER), Cambridge in America, The Carnegie Foundation for International Peace, and the Peterson Institute for International Economics. He is also Chair of Microsoft’s Investment Advisory Committee and Chair of the President's Global Development Council. El-Erian did his undergraduate studies at Cambridge University, and obtained Masters and Doctorates degrees from Oxford.
