After all, I got an offer! Why wouldn’t I feel anything but flattered and thankful that I was the chosen candidate? The same story played out with my next position. It wasn’t until I’d been working for a few years and achieved a fairly high level of responsibility that it dawned on me that I could—and should—negotiate any job offer. By that time, the losses to my earnings had compounded. Unfortunately, I’m not the only woman with a story of how she didn’t ask for more. A recent survey by Huffington Post/Yahoo!/CARE found that 64 percent of women said they did not try to negotiate their pay the last time they were hired for a job. And among those who did? Almost two-thirds—71 percent—were successful, the survey found. We’ve heard all sorts of reasons why women hesitate to negotiate: They worry about being perceived as ungrateful or too demanding. They aren’t sure exactly how to do it. Or they simply can’t get up the nerve. Sadly, some don’t even realize that negotiation is an option—even in 2019. At AAUW, we’re on a mission to change that. While we’re continuing to fight to strengthen pay equity laws and to work with employers to change workplace culture to achieve pay equity, we also know that if more women pushed for more money, it could help to chip away at the gender wage gap. That’s why we created a free online tool called Work Smart Online, which is designed to give women the knowledge and strategies they need to negotiate for better salaries and benefits. It’s a one-hour course based on the same curriculum AAUW uses for its in-person salary-negotiation workshops in various cities across the nation. Now anyone with access to a computer, tablet or smartphone can easily learn the skills they need to bolster their earnings. Work Smart Online covers everything from how to research compensation for specific role to the actual language women should use when asking for the pay and perks they want. It informs women about the new laws preventing employers from inquiring about salary history, which can perpetuate pay discrimination that women have experienced in previous jobs. Above all, it helps women the confidence they need to be assertive when discussing their compensation. The program is effective: In surveys after our Work Smart workshops, nearly all participants reported having more confidence—and better negotiating skills—after taking the course. And, many have told us they’re received a raise, promotion or higher-paying new job. Like many women, I learned the value of negotiating the hard way. Now I’ve made it my job to ensure that you don’t have to. So, let’s get to work! Visit salary.aauw.org to get started. Onward!
