Ryan Long, J.D., former Chief Health Counsel the U.S. Energy & Commerce Committee, joined BGR Government Affairs as a Vice President on February 1, 2013. Ryan will play a key role in BGR’s healthcare practice, focusing primarily on life science and biotech issues, as well as assist with a wide range of issues based on his Capitol Hill tenure. For the past six years, Ryan served as the Chief Health Counsel for the Energy & Commerce Committee’s Health Subcommittee where he was the lead professional staff representative before members of the House, Senate, and the Administration. He helped to develop and manage the policy agenda for the Committee Chairman and members of the Subcommittee on all aspects of healthcare ranging from FDA, Medicare, Medicaid, Health IT, and public health. Prior to his service on the Energy & Commerce Committee, Ryan served for five years with Congressman Joe Barton (R-TX) including as Legislative Director from 2003 to 2004. He developed and implemented all facets of the Congressman’s legislative agenda including healthcare, energy, taxes, and defense, agriculture and trade priorities. In addition, he helped the Congressman to create the bipartisan, bicameral Congressional Privacy Caucus, which focused on such topics as financial privacy and internet privacy. Prior to Congressman Barton, Ryan worked for Congressman Charlie Norwood (R-GA) from 1998 to 1999.
