From AI to Extended Reality, automation to voice, the way we engage with technology is changing by the minute and opening new, exciting possibilities in the process. Here’s one great example for you – particularly if you’re a football fan. Our San Francisco Accenture Labs recently built an Extended Reality (XR) prototype that promises to change the way coaches train their teams, and how they approach coaching of a particular a game. As many of you know, XR brings together technologies such as virtual, augmented and mixed reality to create completely immersive experiences. The highly visual nature of the tech makes it perfect for sports, where teams need all the help they can get in understanding plays and honing their strategies. Imagine you’re a football coach. In the past, when you created new plays, you’d spend your evenings uploading them into a clunky software tool so you could demonstrate them to your team on a 2D screen. When you consider that NFL coaches have to teach around 120 plays per week that’s a hell of a lot of work. With our new app, coaches simply draw a play onto a tablet using a digital pen. The app then generates the play in an Augmented Reality (AR) environment, which everyone on the team can view immediately just by holding up their tablet. The immersive concept allows plays to be visualized as if on a real football field and provides the simplest and most intuitive way yet of teaching complex strategies to players. This means all those laborious hours once spent illustrating plays can be reallocated for other training needs – a difference which could mean winning the next big game. On top of that, all the data becomes digital, so coaches can track how much time players are spending learning each new play. Here’s how it works: The XR team scored an impressive touchdown with this one. And while this application is for football, it’s also a perfect example of how XR can transform processes by blending the physical and the digital worlds – something that will prove important for all businesses in all industries.
