Miriam was elected the National Committeewoman for Hawaii in 1992. Prior to that, she entered politics in 1983 as a grassroots volunteer and was appointed the State Co-Chairman of the Reagan Bush Re-elect Campaign. She was the State Coordinator for the RNC’s Working Partners Community Service Program, she has been a delegate to 8 National Conventions and twice served on the National Platform Committee. She was Chairman of the RNC’s Western States Leadership conference in 1992 and was Co-Chairman of the Hawaii Bush-Quayle Campaign. She served as the Statewide Coordinator of the RNC Nuts and Bolts Grassroots Workshops and was GOTV State Coordintor for Linda Lingle’s campaign for Governor. She later served as the Finance Director for Governor Lingle’s election and re-elect campaign. Miriam was a grassroots trainer for the International Republican Institute in Ankara and Istanbul, Turkey. Miriam was a member of the RNC’s Site Selection Committee for the 2000 Republican National Convention and she served as the Western Region’s representative on the RNC Executive Committee for two terms before becoming the Vice Chairman of the Western Region in 2007. She served on the National Rules Committee for the 2016 RNC Convention. She regularly chairs fundraising events for the Hawaii Republican Party where she also serves as Chairman of the HRP Capital Campaign Committee. Born in Alabama, Miriam received her bachelor and graduate degrees from the University of Alabama where she majored in Speech and Language Pathology. She developed the Speech Therapy Program for Taipei American School before moving to Hawaii where built a Private Practice as a Speech and Language Pathologist. Miriam is married to Dr. Philip Hellreich, a Dermatologist in Kailua, Hawaii. They have one daughter and one granddaughter. She is active in the First Presbyterian Church of Honolulu. In addition to Republican politics, Miriam is passionate about providing healthcare services for underserved populations.
