Stephen Chazen, the former chief executive officer of U.S. oil producer Occidental Petroleum Corp. who later founded and led shale company Magnolia Oil and Gas, MGY died at the age of 76 in September 2022. Mr. Chazen, 66, became President and Chief Executive Officer of Occidental Petroleum Corporation in May 2011. Mr. Chazen served as President and Chief Operating Officer from 2010 to 2011 and as President and Chief Financial Officer from 2007 to 2010. Prior to being named President and Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Chazen was Chief Financial Officer and Senior Executive Vice President from 2004 to 2007, Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President-Corporate Development from 1999 to 2004, and Executive Vice President-Corporate Development from 1994 to 1999. Prior to joining Occidental, Mr. Chazen was a Managing Director in Corporate Finance and Mergers and Acquisitions at Merrill Lynch. Mr. Chazen is a Director of the American Petroleum Institute and serves on the Boards of Aquarium of the Pacific and Catalina Island Conservatory. He has been a member of the Boards of Directors of Lyondell Chemical Company, Premcor Inc. and Washington Mutual, Inc. Mr. Chazen holds a Ph.D. in Geology from Michigan State University, a masters degree in Finance from the University of Houston and a bachelors degree in Geology from Rutgers College.
