Arthur E. Walker, Jr. was born in Louisville, Kentucky on December 27, 1944, soon was moved to Danville, KY, and then to Mt. Sterling, KY at the age of two and has lived there ever since. He attended elementary school at Mt. Sterling and St. Patrick’s Parochial Schools. He graduated from Mt. Sterling High School in 1963 as the Salutatorian of his class. Mr. Walker enrolled at the University of Kentucky in the College of Engineering in the Fall of 1963, and was the President of Donovan Hall during his freshman year. He later became a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and served through the officer levels. After attending college, Mr. Walker went to work full-time for what was then known as Walker Construction Company as a Project Foreman. He has been a full-time employee ever since. He became a Vice-President in 1974 and assumed the position of President in 1981 upon his father’s death. The Walker Company’s construction roots started with Mr. Walker’s grandfather in the early 1900s. His grandfather helped his father, Arthur Walker, Sr., establish his own company in 1933. In 1997, Walker Construction Company became The Walker Company, and Mr. Walker remains the President today. The Walker Company has four divisions today, the Civil Construction Division, of which the Vice-President/Manager is his son, Art Walker, III; the Materials Manufacturing Division led by his other son, Bryce Walker, also the Vice-President/Manager. The General Construction Division and the Equipment Ownership and Maintenance Divisions are led by Vice-Presidents/Managers David Rhodes and Spence Houlihan, respectively. The Walker Company performs grading and drainage, bridge construction, asphalt paving, general contracting, commercial and concrete construction operations, as well as manufactures crushed limestone, hot-mix asphalt and ready-mix concrete. The company also performs reclamation and has been involved in the construction of three major golf courses; Eagle Trace in Rowan County, The Bull in Madison County and Old Silo in Montgomery County. During his career, Mr. Walker has served as a leader in several organizations, including the Past Director and Chairman of the Kentucky Crushed Stone Association in 1987, the Past Director and Chairman of the Kentucky Highway Contractor’s Association in 1988, the Past Director and Chairman of Plantmix Asphalt Industry of Kentucky in 1990, and the Past Director and Chairman of Kentuckians for Better Transportation in 1991. He was also a committee member from 1980 until 1995 for the Construction Engineering and Management Advisory Committee. In 1998, he was named the Director and Contractor’s Division President for the American Road and Transportation Builders Association in Washington, D.C. and is the Current Director of the Road Information Program. Mr. Walker has also been very active in civic and community organizations, including being named the Director and Chairman of Mary Chiles Hospital in Mt. Sterling, the Mt. Sterling Airport Board, the Mt. Sterling- Montgomery County Recreation Commission, the Mt. Sterling Country Club and the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. He is also the Current Director of Delta Natural Gas Company in Winchester, KY as well as Traditional Bancorporation in Mt. Sterling. Arthur has been married to the former Marsha Elaine West of Mt. Sterling for thirty-five years, and they have four children, Art, Bryce, Brandy and Amy, and five granddaughters and three grandsons.
