A former LC faculty member, Dr. Schewel has been a member of the Lynchburg College Board of Trustees since 1980, serving as chair from 1998-2002. She went on to earn three degrees from LC — a master’s in education in 1971, an education specialist degree in 1983 and an honorary doctorate in education in 2000 — and taught in Lynchburg City Schools for six years and in LC’s School of Education and Human Development from 1973 to 1992. She currently is on the college’s board of trustees, among many other commitments, including another educational initiative, Beacon of Hope. The three-year-old group is dedicated to making sure every child who graduates from Lynchburg’s public high schools goes on to college, technical school or some other sort of career training. The arts are another passion, as she and her husband Elliot have been supporters of not just Riverviews but also the Academy of Fine Arts, Opera on the James and Lynchburg College’s Daura Gallery. Other boards she currently serves on include Amazement Square, the Holocaust Foundation Board, the Women’s Leadership Council and CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children).
