Dr. Somoza has a strong interest in the development of mathematical models in psychiatry and other areas of medicine. He has twenty six publications on the optimization of diagnostic tests using (a) the statistical techniques of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis combined with information theory and (b) artificial neural networks as "diagnostic consultants" for medicine and psychiatry. He also has experience in both basic science research (with nineteen publications in neurochemistry), and clinical research in substance abuse (as the principal investigator or investigator in over thirty clinical trials, with eighteen publications). A current special interest of Dr. Somoza's is the selection and evaluation of outcome measures to be used in clinical trials on cocaine abuse.
