Stephen P. Kranz has joined the firm as counsel in its State and Local Tax (SALT) Group. Mr. Kranz comes to Sutherland after serving as general counsel for the Council On State Taxation (COST), a trade association based in Washington, D.C., which represents the interests of nearly 600 of the nation's largest taxpayers on issues of state and local taxation. Prior to joining COST, Mr. Kranz spent six years as an Honors Program trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice, Tax Division, and two years as the Chief Counsel to the District of Columbia's Office of Tax and Revenue. Mr. Kranz is well positioned to provide all forms of taxpayer advocacy, including state tax controversy and litigation. He will also focus on tax policy matters, litigation, legislative monitoring and the formation and leadership of taxpayer coalitions. Mr. Kranz represents clients before state legislatures, the United States Congress, National Conference of State Legislatures, National Governors Association, Multistate Tax Commission and Federation of Tax Administrators. He also serves as President of the Business Advisory Council to the Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board.
