Attended Stanford Law School, from which he received his J.D. in 1949. He served as law clerk to Associate Justice John W. Shenk of the California Supreme Court until 1951, when he joined the law department of Pacific Gas and Electric Co. He worked for several years in the law department, but his business and management skills were soon recognized. He became Assistant to the President in 1963, Vice President and Assistant to the Chairman in 1965, and Executive Vice President and Director in 1976. In 1979, he was appointed Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board. He retired as CEO in 1986 but remained on the Board for another seven years. Fred earned his B.A. in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley. Married Lorraine Roberts in 1947 and remained so until Lorraine's death in 2008. He was a trustee of Stanford University (1977-87) and also served on the Stanford Law School Board of Visitors and the Stanford Graduate School of Business Advisory Council. He was also a trustee for Golden Gate University, a director of Independent Colleges of Northern California, a member of the University of San Francisco's president's Council, and a member of the United Negro College Fund advisory board.
