Crawford Toy Johnson III

Crawford Toy Johnson, III, first saw the light of day in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on January 4, 1925. His parents, Crawford T. Johnson, Jr., and Mary Stuart Snyder Johnson, were not slow in deciding to move to Birmingham where Crawford, III, was reared and continues to reside. Crawford Johnson, III, attended Lakeview Grade School in Birmingham and Lawrenceville School, a preparatory school in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. He was an alumnus of both Stevens Institute of Technology and the University of Virginia, having earned a B.S. degree from the latter institution. Crawford Johnson wooed and won Virginia Jemison Goodall, and on November 11, 1950, they became man and wife. To this happy union have been born two sets of twin girls. The Crawford Johnsons are the proud grandparents of eleven. Crawford Toy Johnson, III, answered his country's call to arms and served in the United States Navy in the Atlantic and Pacific theatres in the years 1945-46. Upon being separated from the armed services, he returned to Birmingham and became associated with his family's Coca Cola business. Mr. Johnson became Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of the Coca Cola Bottling Company United Inc., with plants in Birmingham; Augusta, Georgia; Chattanooga, Tennessee; and Spartanburg, South Carolina. The demanding responsibilities of directing his business affairs did prevent Crawford Johnson from being a devoted husband and an adoring father. His family was his foremost consideration and joy. He seized opportunities to contribute time and means to civic, educational, and cultural programs in his community and his state. Mr. Johnson was active in United Appeal, National Conference of Christians and Jews, United Negro College Fund, and gave support to drives for institutions of higher learning as well as religious organizations. Business firms other than his own have sought his counsel by electing him to their Boards of Directors. He served in that capacity with Alabama Power Company, Protective Life Insurance Company, and AmSouth Bank, N.A., Birmingham. In gratitude for his usefulness as a concerned citizen, both Samford University and The University of Alabama at Birmingham awarded Crawford Johnson, III, honorary Doctor of Laws degrees. The many demands upon his time did not keep Crawford Johnson from being loyal to his Cathedral Church of the Advent in which he filled the offices of Vestryman, Junior Warden, and Senior Warden.
