Robert E. Mnuchin is a major art dealer and art adviser. He is co-owner of L&M Arts, along with Dominique Lévy, formerly of Christie’s.
Mnuchin spent 33 years at Goldman Sachs (and earned the nickname “Coach”) before turning to his full attention to the art trade. After graduating from Yale and serving in the Army, he joined the bank in 1957 and became a partner a decade later. By 1976 he was co-head of the trading and arbitrage division, and by 1980 he was a member of the management committee.
Mnuchin made the decision – “with a lot of ambivalence” – to retire from Goldman Sachs in 1994, ready to focus on art – a passion that was sparked many years before, when he began to accumulate a collection of pieces by artists like Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Mark Rothko in the 1970s.
Following his departure from Goldman, Mnuchin collaborated with Los Angeles dealer James Corcoran to start C&M Arts; C&M became L&M in 2005 when Mnuchin joined up with Christie’s alum Dominique Lévy. In September L&M Arts launched a new gallery at a former power plant in Venice, CA. Among his roster of clients is the elusive Connecticut financier Steven A. Cohen.
Mnuchin’s wife Adriana is an entrepreneur as well as co-founder and board member of the Shakespeare Society. They live in a full-floor co-op on Fifth Avenue where Barbara Walters has a neighboring apartment and spend weekends at their home in Washington, Connecticut.more » « less
