Sommer joins UnitedHealth Group from Goldman Sachs & Company, where he most recently was head of State and Local Advisory Services in the Public Sector and Infrastructure Group. Previously, he created and ran the domestic and worldwide government relations function after joining Goldman Sachs in 1984. Sommer became a managing director of that company in 1997. Sommer was formerly a partner in the law firm, Stroock & Stroock & Lavan and previously served in various positions for Senator Jacob J. Javits (R-NY) in the U.S. Senate. He currently serves as a member of the board of directors of both Y-USA, the YMCA's National Board, and the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington, D.C., where he formerly served as chairman. He received his bachelor's degree from Johns Hopkins University and his J.D. from New York University School of Law.
