Son of the late Yetta Fridman and the late Milton Petrie, nationally known retailer and philanthropist. Bernard was a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and the University of Michigan Law School, where he was an editor of the Law Review. After serving as an associate at major law firms in New York City and San Francisco, he served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of California. Thereafter he practiced in his own law office for over forty-five years. He served as a member of the Board of Governors of the San Francisco Symphony, as a member of the Board of Visitors of Stanford Law School, as a member of the California Judicial Nominees Evaluation Commission, and on several committees of the Bar Association of San Francisco. At the time of his death he was a member of the Committee of visitors of the University of Michigan Law School, and a Trustee of the New York University School of Law. He is survived by his half sister Patricia Hugenberg of Belvedere, and her son, Kurt, and by his half sister Marianne Miller of Greenwich, Connecticut, and her son, Matthew.
