Throughout his career, Coleman's firm has been a conduit for companies to speak to cultural markets using nontraditional messages that appeal to their values and beliefs. Following a four-year stint as a linebacker with the New Orleans Saints and later, the New York Jets, Coleman began his communications career at Campbell-Ewald Advertising where he held a number of positions, including Senior Vice President. Upon leaving Campbell-Ewald, he moved to Chicago to work with a firm that targeted the African-American consumer market. Coleman's career progressed with the fulfillment of his dream to own an advertising agency, Don Coleman Advertising in 1988. In 2002, he united his firm with the Hispanic agency Montemayor y Asociados and the Asian agency Innovasia Communications to form GlobalHue.
