Patrick Lynn Swindall

A Representative from Georgia; born in Gadsden, Ala., October 18, 1950; attended public schools; B.A., University of Georgia, 1972; J.D., University of Georgia School of Law, 1975; practiced law in Atlanta, Ga., 1975-1984; elected as a Republican to the Ninety-ninth and One Hundredth Congresses (January 3, 1985-January 3, 1989); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1988 to the One Hundred First Congress; is a resident of Stone Mountain, Ga. Mr. Swindall’s political career crumbled in 1988 under the cloud of an indictment charging him with perjury. He was accused of lying to a federal grand jury about a loan for construction on his home in Stone Mountain home, which he had negotiated with an undercover agent posing as a drug-money launderer. Mr. Swindall lost his seat in the 1988 election to his Democratic opponent, Ben Jones, an actor best known for playing Cooter on the television show “The Dukes of Hazzard.” He was convicted on nine counts in 1989 and sentenced to one year in prison. The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals overturned three of the counts, but the Supreme Court upheld the remaining six. He began serving his sentence in 1994. After his release, Mr. Swindall went into the commercial real estate business and hosted a radio program about the intersection of politics and religion. He lived in Johns Creek, a suburb of Atlanta, with his wife of 36 years, Kimberly. He also had seven grown children.
