Earl Thomas Coleman

Congressional Bio: A Representative from Missouri; born in Kansas City, Jackson County, Mo., May 29, 1943; attended public schools; B.A., William Jewell College, Liberty, Mo., 1965; M.P.A., New York University, New York, N.Y., 1969; J.D., Washington University, St. Louis, Mo., 1969; admitted to the Missouri bar in 1969 and commenced practice in Kansas City; served as State assistant attorney general, 1969-1972; elected to the State house of representatives, 1973-1976; elected simultaneously as a Republican to the Ninety-fourth and Ninety-fifth Congress by special election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of United States Representative Jerry L. Litton, and reelected to the seven succeeding Congresses (November 2, 1976-January 3, 1993); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1992 to the One Hundred Third Congress; is a resident of Fairfax County, Va. Livingston Group Corporate Overview Bio: Honorable E. Thomas Coleman (Senior Counselor) Tom Coleman is a former Member of Congress who represented Missouri’s sixth district. He is a government relations professional with over twenty-five years experience in Washington, DC. Positions held include sixteen years as a Republican Member of Congress from Missouri and ten years as Vice President, Government Relations for BASF Corporation. As the head of BASF’s Washington Office, he served as the company’s senior official for public affairs and was responsible for representing BASF’s interests in the legislative and executive branches as well as with the states. Because BASF is the world’s largest chemical company with headquarters located in Germany, he also participated in significant international activities. Congressman Coleman was a member of the House Education and Labor Committee and served for twelve years as the senior Republican on the Post Secondary Education Subcommittee. During his service on the subcommittee, he had significant impact on three reauthorizations of the Higher Education Act. He authored the Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need program that continues to provide financial support for graduate students pursuing a doctorate degree in science, math, and other critical areas. Recognizing his expertise in higher education, Yale University appointed him to its University Council Committee on the Graduate School. Additionally he served as a consultant to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Task Force on Gender Equity. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society and is a member of the Board of Directors for the Organization for International Investment. He is a member of the Missouri and District of Columbia Bar Associations. He earned his Juris Doctorate degree at Washington University School of Law, St. Louis, Missouri and has a Masters of Public Administration from New York University. His undergraduate degree in economics is from William Jewell College.
