Itimous Thaddeus Valentine Jr

A Representative from North Carolina; born in Rocky Mount, Nash County, N.C., March 15, 1926; attended public schools in Nashville, N.C.; A.B., The Citadel, Charleston, S.C., 1948; LL.B., University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, N.C., 1952; served in the United States Air Force, 1944-1946; admitted to the North Carolina bar, 1952 and commenced practice in Nashville; member of North Carolina house of representatives, 1955-1960; chairman, North Carolina Democratic executive committee, 1966-1968; delegate, Democratic National Convention, 1968; elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-eighth and to the five succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1983-January 3, 1995); not a candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Fourth Congress. Itimous Thaddeus Valentine Jr. was born in Rocky Mount on March 15, 1926. His father, also named Itimous and known by that name (he was one of several brothers with unusual names of unknown origin), was a State Supreme Court justice. His mother, the former Hazel Armstrong, was a postmistress. He served in the Army Air Forces during World War II, and graduated from the Citadel in Charleston, S.C., in 1948 and the law school of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1952. He served in the State House of Representatives and was the state party chairman. In addition to his wife, the former Barbara Reynolds, he is survived by four children from his first marriage, Stephen, Mark, Philip and Beth Dollar; three stepchildren, Mark C. Berry, Vaughn Berry-Daniel and Bryan E. Berry; nine grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandson.
