Itimous Thaddeus Valentine Jr. was born in Rocky Mount on March 15, 1926. His father, also named Itimous and known by that name (he was one of several brothers with unusual names of unknown origin), was a State Supreme Court justice. His mother, the former Hazel Armstrong, was a postmistress. He served in the Army Air Forces during World War II, and graduated from the Citadel in Charleston, S.C., in 1948 and the law school of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1952. He served in the State House of Representatives and was the state party chairman. In addition to his wife, the former Barbara Reynolds, he is survived by four children from his first marriage, Stephen, Mark, Philip and Beth Dollar; three stepchildren, Mark C. Berry, Vaughn Berry-Daniel and Bryan E. Berry; nine grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandson.
