Sidney Richard Yates

A Representative from Illinois; born in Chicago, Ill., August 27, 1909; graduated from Lake View High School, Chicago, Ill., 1928; B.A., University of Chicago, Chicago, Ill., 1931; J.D., University of Chicago, Chicago, Ill., 1933; United States Navy, 1944-1946; lawyer, private practice; assistant attorney for Illinois state bank receiver, 1935-1937; assistant attorney general attached to Illinois Commerce Commission as traction attorney, 1937-1940; elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-first and to the six succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1949-January 3, 1963); was not a candidate for renomination to the Eighty-eighth Congress in 1962, but was an unsuccessful candidate for United States Senate; United States Representative to the Trusteeship Council of the United Nations with rank of Ambassador, 1963-1964; elected to the Eighty-ninth and to the sixteen succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1965-January 3, 1999); was not a candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Sixth Congress in 1998; died on October 5, 2000, in Washington, D.C.; interment at Memorial Park Cemetery, Skokie, Ill.
