Danforth Quayle 1976-1980; elected as a Republican to the Ninety-seventh and to the three succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1981-January 3, 1989); elected to the One Hundred First Congress but did not serve; appointed on December 12, 1988, to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the election of J. Danforth Quayle as Vice President, and took the oath of office on January 3, 1989; elected by special election in 1990 to the remainder of the term; reelected for a full term in 1992, and served from January 3, 1989, to January 3, 1999; was not a candidate for reelection in 1998; special counsel, law firm of Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, MacPherson and Hand; U.S. Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany 2001-2005; again elected to the United States Senate in 2010 for the term ending January 3, 2017.
