Martin Whittaker co-leads the firm's private markets investment activities, with an emphasis on clean energy, clean technology and environmental investment portfolio strategies. He brings over 15 years of investment and business experience to the firm's investment research, portfolio design and direct investment services. Prior to joining Sonen, Martin served as a senior advisor to Springcreek Advisors. Previously, Martin was a Director of MissionPoint Capital Partners, a family office-based private equity investment firm. As a founding employee of the firm, Martin played a senior role in the company's investment strategy and business development efforts, and spearheaded investment activities in the environmental markets, climate risk and carbon finance areas. Prior to joining MissionPoint, Martin was a Senior Vice President at Swiss Re Financial Services in New York City, where he was part of the Environmental and Commodity Markets team. He helped establish the company's environmental markets and carbon insurance capabilities, as well as the European Clean Energy Fund, a $500 million clean energy infrastructure vehicle. Prior to Swiss Re, Martin helped establish and was a Managing Director of Innovest Strategic Value Advisors, a pioneering investment research firm within the sustainability markets. Martin currently serves as an advisor to several clean energy and environmental market companies, and is a Board Member of the Carbon Disclosure Project North America. He has also previously acted as a strategic advisor with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto where he taught environmental finance. Martin holds a Ph.D. in environmental science from the University of Edinburgh, an M.B.A. from the University of London, and M.Sc. and B.Sc. degrees in Chemistry from, respectively, McGill University, Montreal and the University of St. Andrews, Scotland.
