Kathy Surace-Smith has served as Vice President and General Counsel of Seattle-based NanoString Technologies, a NASDAQ-listed provider of life science tools for translational research and developer of molecular diagnostics since February 2013. She was Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of SonoSite Inc. (Bothell, WA), a NASDAQ-listed medical device company specializing in hand carried ultrasound systems, for eight years prior to its acquisition by FujiFilm, Inc. in 2012. Ms. Surace-Smith began her career in private practice with the law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and has also held legal positions with Metawave Communications in Redmond, WA, Alcatel NV in Paris, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London. She received an A.B. in politics from Princeton University magna cum laude and a J.D. from Columbia University School of Law, where she was an editor of the Columbia Law Review. While at CLS, she shared the award with her husband (also a law student at CLS) for highest grade point average in international law courses. She a member of the Board of Directors of the United Way of King County (and served as Board Chair in 2017-18), the Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Fred Hutch Cancer Center in Seattle, and co-chair of the Policy Leadership Group of the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce.
