Jiang Mianheng serves on several boards of directors, including the China Netcom Company, the Shanghai Automotive Industry Company and the Shanghai Airport Group Company. He was vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences from 1999-2011, where he was responsible for research and development on fuel cells, hydrogen energy, coal-based synoil, wireless sensor networks and other technologies. After attending Fudan University, Jiang joined the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Shanghai Institute of Metallurgy, serving as president from 1997-99. He has also served as a research fellow and tutor of doctoral candidates at the Acadamy's Shanhgai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology (SIMIT). In 1991, Jiang received a PhD in electrical engineering from Drexel University in Philadelphia. His doctoral research focused on high-transition temperature superconductor materials. From 1991-93, he was on the staff of the Hewlett-Packard Corporation in California.
