The first Army general to head Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command, Jacoby leads America’s first line of defense when it comes to attacks on the homeland. He also is responsible for the ground-based midcourse missile defense system, an element of the ballistic missile defense system that allows combatant commanders to engage and destroy limited intermediate- and long-range ballistic missiles. An infantryman at heart, Jacoby is a 1978 West Point graduate who has commanded at various levels within the 82nd Airborne Division. After a teaching stint at West Point and service with the 25th Infantry Division, Jacoby commanded I Corps and led the headquarters on its deployment to Iraq.
