Dr. Gottlieb is also a resident fellow of the American Enterprise Institute. He served as 23rd Commissioner of the U.S. Food & Drug Administration from 2017 to 2019. Previously, he held several roles in the public and private sectors, including serving as FDA's Deputy Commission for Medical & Scientific Affairs and as a senior adviser to the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Seervices. Dr. Gottlieb held a number of senior positions at the FDA during President George W. Bush’s administration, including deputy commissioner for medical and scientific affairs, senior adviser to the FDA commissioner and director of medical policy development. He also served as a senior adviser to the CMS administrator, helping to implement the Part D prescription drug benefit. Currently, he serves as a member of the Federal Health IT Policy Committee. Dr. Gottlieb advises a number of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies including GlaxoSmithKline and Tolero Pharmaceuticals, where he is a member of the board of directors, and Vertex Pharmaceuticals. Further, he is the managing director of T.R. Winston & Co., a privately held bank with a focus on healthcare, and a venture partner at New Enterprise Associates. Dr. Gottlieb also serves as a clinical assistant professor at the New York University School of Medicine. He holds a bachelor’s in economics from Wesleyan University and a medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine of New York University, where he completed his residency in internal medicine.
