Wharton grad joined family cosmetics company in 1958; pushed operation into pharmaceuticals. Made fortune building—and flipping—a variety of businesses. Developed Permalens soft contact lens; sold optics outfit to Cooper Labs for $60 million in 1971. Founded Vision Cable in 1972, built subscriber base to 230,000; sold to Newhouse brothers for $220 million in 1982. Then flipped cell phone outfit Metro Mobile to Bell Atlantic for $2.5 billion in 1991. Today is chief executive of gas and pipeline firm Southern Union.
