McKool Smith was founded in 1991 with a group of 13 trial lawyers in Dallas. Over the last 20 years, we have attracted and retained the highest caliber of legal talent, which has enabled McKool Smith to increase to over 165 litigators and open offices in Austin, Houston, Los Angeles, Marshall, New York, and Washington, DC. The ability to grow and succeed is a direct reflection of the success and growth of our clients. McKool Smith is entrepreneurial and has a history of strategically adding offices and practice areas in anticipation of changes in the legal market. For instance, in 1996, the firm expanded into Marshall, Texas in the Eastern District, which would soon establish a reputation as a "rocket docket" for patent infringement cases. The firm prepared for the patent litigation boom by opening an office in Austin in 2000 and launching an IP litigation practice. We then enhanced our IP litigation practice with the addition of an International Trade Commission (ITC) litigation practice and a new Washington, DC office in 2007, as the ITC gained momentum as a popular forum for U.S. businesses to resolve their infringement disputes. Later in 2007, the firm opened an office in New York City and added a white collar defense practice as government enforcement and investigations increased as a result of the financial crisis. In 2009, McKool Smith expanded into bankruptcy litigation with the opening of its Houston office. This strategic move was timed perfectly to the rise in number of unsuccessful business ventures and the national increase in bankruptcy filings. In September 2011, the firm announced the joining of Hennigan Dorman, which added 35 talented trial lawyers to our roster who operate from the firm's new office in Los Angeles. It has also expanded our national reach, strengthened our core practice areas, and enabled us to provide enhanced services, including, but not limited to: • Advanced commercial litigation capabilities, particularly in banking and securities litigation, and securities fraud • Additional bench strength in intellectual property litigation, including expanded capabilities in copyright and trademark infringement matters • New financial consulting services to assist in the intake, discovery, and trial phases of litigation Our combined firm, McKool Smith, does business as McKool Smith Hennigan in California.
